Workshop: Intro to Screenprinting

One-day workshop with Abe Kelso
October 10, 2015
9:00 am to 4:00 pm
$100, materials included (WhitPrint members $90)

About the Workshop

Screenprinting is a fun and versatile process that can be used to transfer any type of graphic image onto paper, wood, or fabric.  It is often used for posters, greeting cards, t-shirts, coasters, and more.  Bring an idea you want to print and a material you want to print it on and this workshop will show you the ropes.

This course will provide a thorough introduction to the screenprinting process. All participants will prepare screens for and print a one- or two-color print with a maximum dimension of 11 x 17 inches.  During the first part of the workshop, participants will design and create stencils either by hand or using the computer and inkjet printer.  These images will then be transferred to the studio screens during the second half of the workshop, where the focus will be on proper printing technique and registration.

Participants should bring an image or an idea in mind for the piece you will create, and any material on which you want to print: paper, t-shirts, tote bags, etc., with a maximum print area of 11 x 17 inches.

Lunch is not provided. You can bring your lunch and eat it in the studio's garden courtyard or pop out to one of the local eateries in the Whiteaker neighborhood.

The workshop will be held in the new Whiteaker Printmakers Annex, at 1320 W 2nd Ave, in the same building as the main WhitPrint studio.

About the Instructor

Abraham Kelso is a printmaker as well an architecture student at the University of Oregon.  He received his BFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design.  Meticulous marks and spaces with a toe dipped in unreality are some of his favorite things. Recently he has been focused on opening up the WhitPrint Annex, and he is excited to be part of a new and growing community printshop.
