About This Workshop

If you enjoy working with your hands, woodblock printmaking may be the perfect artistic medium for you. Don’t miss this opportunity find out with BIG INK’s Lyell Castonguay! This year, in advance of the BIG INK weekend at Whiteaker Printmakers, Castonguay is offering a one-day intensive course that teaches the essential techniques to carve and print a 6-by-6-inch woodblock. All skill levels are welcome.

The day starts with an ice-breaker exercise that teaches essential carving techniques and tool maintenance. Students then move onto the main project: carving a black-and-white woodblock based on an original design. Castonguay will review each student's design and demonstrate his favorite digital image transfer process. For the printing process, he’ll teach the use of a traditional etching press as well as how to create hand-rubbed impressions at home. Students will learn which inks and papers are well suited for woodblock printmaking and creative ways to display their finished prints. By day’s end students will have an understanding of the entire process and be ready to implement new techniques into their studio practice.
