  • Whiteaker Printmakers 1328 W 2nd Ave Eugene, OR, 97402 United States (map)

Two-Saturday workshop with Mika Aono
September 10th and 17th, 2022
10 am to 4 pm
$180 plus $40 materials fee
(WhitPrint members $162 plus $40 for materials)

About the Workshop

Mokulito was developed by Seishi Ozaku, a professor emeritus in Printmaking at Tama Art University in Tokyo. This is a lithography technique using a wood matrix instead of stone or aluminum plates. The process relies on the same lithographic principle that oil and water don’t mix. Processing the wood plate is much easier and avoids some of the more toxic materials used in traditional lithography. Printing uses an etching press, rather than a litho press.

The same drawing materials are used – litho crayons, tusche, oil-based pens, etc. – to create an image on the wood surface, allowing gray tones. At the same time, the plate can be treated as a woodcut, adding additional features to the final print; even the wood grain may become part of the final image! Then, you can add colors directly onto the woodblock.

In this workshop, you’ll learn basic Mokulito techniques using plywood plates and a variety of drawing materials.

On the first Saturday you will work on your first image, and learn the steps to process the plate before printing. Since the plate needs to sit overnight, you will print your plate on the second Saturday. Also on that day, you will have time to create a second block, and use a “quick-process” method to allow printing the same day.

All supplies are provided, including drawing materials, paper, inks, and woodcut tools. Each participant will receive two 9” x 12” plywood plates.
