About the Workshop

In this workshop, you will learn to create layered, rich imagery using drypoint techniques and etching tools, a range of wipeable surfaces, and plates made from inexpensive materials like recycled tetrapak and mat board.

During the workshop, we will start by looking at some prepared examples and discussing the concepts and techniques involved with building/designing a plate for intaglio. Technical demonstrations will cover creating imagery with a range of wipeable materials, collagraph with mat board and tapes, drypoint into tetrapak, proper inking and wiping, paper soaking and blotting, setting of an etching press, creating a registration guide, and finally... pulling the print!

Day two will cover collagraph/drypoint plate creation, creating a range of wipeable surfaces with the use of tapes, drypoint tools, etc. This is a great, no drying time involved, way to explore collagraph. Motivated students could even plan a multi-plate print using both tetrapak and collagraph!

Workshop participants can prepare for class by bringing in a 4x6 inch sketch that includes areas of white, grey, and black. Krista will cover how this sketch can transfer onto an intaglio plate during class.

About the Instructor

Krista Raasch studied printmaking in Mankato, Minnesota while pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Later, she continued her exploratory art studies at the University of Oregon, where she received a Masters of Fine Arts in Fibers. There, she got to play and print on the amazing textile printing tables, sparking an interest in combining printmaking with mixed medias.

She is a passionate, energetic instructor who truly loves being in the print studio with others. Exploring, experimenting, learning from surprises, reacting, and adapting are all things discussed, demonstrated, and lived by Krista in her workshops.
