About the Workshop

Intro to Intaglio Printmaking, taught by local artist/teacher Bryan Putnam, is an exciting and thorough exploration of intaglio printmaking. This course has been designed to offer students fundamental skills in the medium as they create their own intaglio prints. Topics will include hardground etching, aquatint, as well as other intaglio printmaking essentials.

This is a two-day course, Saturday and Sunday, with 4 hours of instruction plus a one-hour lunch break each day.

Saturday's topics include:

  • Plate preparation
  • Hardground application
  • Line etch tools and techniques
  • Ferric chloride etching
  • Printing Primer

Sunday is devoted to aquatint, including:

  • Applying aquatint
  • Working the aquatint
  • Printing

All studio materials will be provided. Bring an image or an idea in mind for the piece you will create.

Lunch is not provided. You can bring your lunch and eat it in the studio's garden courtyard or pop out to one of the local cafes.

About the Instructor

Bryan Putnam is a local artist with a deep love of the print arts. He began his working in printmaking as an undergrad with the artist Scott Kolbo and continued his education at UO, studying with Charlene Liu and other talented faculty. After receiving his MFA in 2014, Bryan stayed on to teach printmaking and drawing full time at the University of Oregon. His work has been shown in various regional galleries and museums over the past few years. In 2014 he was the youngest artist included in 'Ink This: Contemporary Printmaking in the Northwest' at the Tacoma Art Museum. Bryan currently lives in Eugene with his wife, making prints, comics, and t-shirts when he is not sharing printmaking with his students.
