About the Workshop

Learn the basics of screen printing in this introductory workshop. The first Saturday will include discussions and demonstrations of the concepts, origins and techniques of screen printing. Topics will include application of emulsion and coating screens; materials used for developing a single color image to print; and image transfer (burning) to screen. Each student will also begin to create their own image to print. Participants will then have a week between classes to continue working on either their hand-drawn or digitally created image.

The second Saturday will include an overview on tools and techniques for printing as well as inks and substrates. We’ll see how to create the stencil, setup a screen for printing, go through the printing process, post-print breakdown and screen reclamation (emulsion removal) as well as screen preparation for future use. There will be an opportunity at the end of the day to further discuss questions and concepts.

All tools and materials will be provided, including screens (one for each student), black poster ink, emulsion, and transparencies for creating images. We will provide sharpies and pens for drawing on the transparencies, but participants are welcome to bring their own tools (opaque black) as well. Participants may also create their image digitally via computer or tablet that they will need to bring. Paper will be provided so each student can print an edition of up to 20 prints. Time permitting, additional paper may be purchased at the studio for larger editions.

About the Instructor

Brit Howard began screen-printing in 2003 at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She graduated with a bachelors degree in both Classical Sculpture and Printmaking in 2007.

When not pulling or pushing a squeegee, she can be found out in nature with her old grumpy dog, Duke Hazard, or on a motorcycle without Duke Hazard. She manages to support herself (barely), by doing freelance illustration, commercial printing, and helping local artists produce quality art of their own. Typically, this involves t-shirt and flat stock printing though she has been known to print on whatever substrates fall into her lap.

Brit believes artists are physical philosophers, realizing their ideas through tangible manifestations.
Also, she is a nice person.
And, she believes that only self-proclaimed idiots refer to themselves in the third-person.
Lastly, she hopes to meet you.
