About the Workshop
Master printmaker and OSU art professor Yuji Hiratsuka returns to WhitPrint to teach his distinct and engaging method of producing beautiful multi-color images from a single copper plate. In this 2-day workshop, we will focus on only 2 colors, but the process can be extended to include additional colors.
The process begins with a deep etching printed in black, after which the plate is reclaimed and re-etched for subsequent printing in an additional color. Each new color layer offers a creative juncture as your image evolves. Yuji will be demonstrating and guiding you through the techniques and materials of this delightful process, including paper and ink selection, registration tricks, and mounting the completed print on heavy rag paper for final presentation. You'll learn about intaglio printing on thin washi (kozo/mulberry) paper, chine collé, and a variety of etching techniques, including aquatint, photocopy transfer, roulette, and spit bite.
Day one: introduction; development of key plate (etching, aquatint, soft-ground, marbling, etc.); edition in black on kozo paper.
Day two: recondition the key plate (remove previous image with sanding and polishing); develop second color image (yellow, red or blue); edition over key/black image. After the second color is completed mounting (chine colle) process is introduced on a heavier rag paper. Final feedback, critique.
All materials and supplies for the workshop are provided to you, including a 9" x 12" copper plate, papers, inks, and tools. Extra paper will be available for purchase at the studio. Please bring to the workshop at least one image ready to trace onto your plate.
About the Instructor
Yuji Hiratsuka was born in Osaka, Japan. He has a B.S. in Art Education from Tokyo Gakugei University, and degrees in printmaking from New Mexico State University (MA) and Indiana University (MFA). He currently is a professor of printmaking at Oregon State University. Hiratsuka has received numerous international awards. Since 2010 he has had 13 solo shows in the US, as well as in Korea, Canada and Northern Ireland. Some of the public collections that include Hiratsuka’s art are The British Museum, Tokyo Central Museum, Panstwowe Museum in Poland; The House of Humor and Satire in Bulgaria, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cleveland Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, New York Public Library, The Library of Congress and The Smithsonian’s Museum of Asian Art.

Studio Hygiene
