About the Workshop

If you enjoy working with your hands, relief printmaking may be the perfect artistic medium for you. Join artist Lyell Castonguay for a class that teaches you the necessary skills to design, carve, and print a 6" x 6" image.

Castonguay will discuss materials and show you examples from his print collection. He will review your design and recommend a transfer method to get your image onto a piece of cherry plywood.

Once we apply your design to the woodblock, Castonguay will demonstrate how to use carving tools. You'll discover how hand chisels carve a wide array of marks and inspiring textures.

Next, you'll learn how to print your woodblock. We apply ink to the woodblock's surface, lay printing paper on top, and run it through an etching press. Castonguay will also show you how to print hand-rubbed impressions without a press. We'll cover what ink and paper are best suited for either printing method.

By the day's end, you'll have received a full walkthrough of the process and be ready to carve your next design!

All skills levels are welcome.

About the Instructor

Lyell Castonguay is a printmaker creating narrative woodblock prints depicting the natural world. Recently he has been playing with the introduction of man-made objects, a plane seen immersed in a murmuration of birds, a submarine moving through a shoal of fish; but his work always has a natural underlying theme.  His main subject is the portraiture of birds.  He is represented by Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts, Brattleboro, VT and Brumfield Gallery, Astoria, OR.  Visit www.lyellcastonguay.com for more information.
