About the Workshop

Stone lithography is one of the most popular and revered forms of fine art printmaking. Originally invented in 1796, this form of printmaking utilizes a limestone slab, made flat and smooth, and relies on the mutual repulsion of oil and water to transfer an image from the stone to the paper. Unique among printmaking techniques, stone lithography offers the artist a broad and exquisite range of mark-making. Famous artists from Daumier to Manet to Escher have all produced lithographic works.

This workshop offers a complete introduction to traditional stone lithography and some additional studio sessions where participants can come in to work on the project during their own time! (with the assistance of the studio director). It will cover all the basic steps involved, including graining and preparing the stone, drawing with a variety of materials, etching the stone, inking, and printing. Each participant will operate at least one of WhitPrint’s three stone litho presses.

Thorough note-taking is encouraged — there’s a lot of information in this workshop! Once participants have learned the process, they may continue to practice lithography at WhitPrint as a member or visiting artist.
