2 day Weekend Workshop with Candice Francis
July 25th & 26th 10am - 3pm each day

Workshop Description

Day 1 – Design & Carving
10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

The first day will focus on developing an image suitable for relief printing and transferring it onto a wood block. We will discuss how to simplify images into bold black-and-white compositions, explore examples from historical and contemporary printmakers, and learn safe carving techniques and tool handling. Students will spend the majority of the day carving their blocks while receiving individual guidance and feedback.

Day 2 – Inking & Printing
10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

On the second day, students will learn how to properly ink and print their carved blocks using professional printmaking tools and an etching press. We will cover paper preparation, inking techniques, registration basics, and common troubleshooting methods to achieve crisp, consistent prints. Participants can expect to complete a small edition of prints and gain the knowledge needed to continue exploring relief printmaking on their own.

What to Bring

Students should bring two simple image ideas suitable for a 5” × 7” and a 8” x 10” black-and-white print. High-contrast photographs, drawings, and bold graphic designs work especially well for beginning relief prints.

All wood blocks, inks, paper, and studio equipment will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own carving tools, though tools will also be available for use during the workshop.
