About the Workshop
Photopolymer gravure is a modern version of copperplate photogravure, merging printmaking and photography to produce beautiful hand-pulled prints.
The process uses UV light to etch into a light sensitive polymer attached to a steel plate. This gives the artist/photographer a whole new range of possibilities in terms of color and feel of the resulting print. The class is open to all, regardless of experience. Those with an interest in photography, or using photographic imagery to create a plate will especially love this workshop.
Works produced during this workshop will be a black-and white process, so keep that in mind when selecting what image or drawing you want to use for the process. Drawings will need to be scanned and edited in a black-and-white format.
The class includes all the materials to make 3 plates and a short print run of them.
About the Instructor
Sarah Grew is a photographer, painter and printmaker based in the Pacific-Northwest whose work often expands into installation and environmental art. Infused in ideas bridging art history, philosophy, and natural sciences, her art studies ideas of time, light and climate change.
Her photography has won numerous awards and she has participated in artist residencies at Playa, Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, Djerassi Resident Artist Program and Ucross Foundation among others. Mostly working in alternative process photographic printing methods, Grew enjoys pushing the edges of how to make prints.
